Beside him, his uncle—the same man who had spent the car ride complaining about traffic and gas prices—now stood transformed, gripping a sword longer than he was tall, his usual slouch replaced by the bearing of a warrior. “Stay behind me,” he muttered, voice rough with something deeper than fear. The black suitcase at their feet hummed ominously, its lock clicking open on its own. Lu Mingfei’s hands shook. This wasn’t a mission. It was an omen.
